Wii Hacks

OK guys! The guide you have all been waiting for is here! A full-complete guide to get HBC and backup launchers working all in one!! PLEASE READ THE WHOLE GUIDE AND MAKE SURE YOU UNDERSTAND IT BEFORE YOU PROCEED!!!! We don't want any bricked wiis out there, do we?

This will work on SYSTEM MENU 4.2 VIRGIN and UPDATED. It will work for 4.2e, 4.2u and 4.2j , dunno about 4.2k (Cioscorp users will have a problem, "no vulnerable ios error", [Only Registered Members May View Links| Click here to register])

There is a new DVD drive chipset that is starting to emerge that will not play DVDR, if your Wii came with sys menu 4.0 or newer on it then it could be one, the chipset is known as a D3-2 and the only way of telling if you have one is to open her up, but as this will invalidate your warranty you are better off trying to load DVDRs and if you just keep getting errors then it is a good indication that you have one. The USB loader will still work though so just follow the guide as normal.

Warning, please all those who are on lower than 4.2, DO NOT update yet!! If you are on 3.1-4.1 system menu you should use [Only Registered Members May View Links| Click here to register]

Waninkoko's 4.2 SAFE updater is already out here, but it is not recommended that you update to 4.2 anyway. An online update will remove any cios you had on the wii!! You will lose the ability to play backups and load through usb! this is only for those who are already on 4.2.

Also, do not downgrade your 4.2 wii!!

The only extra that you will need is an SD card (I reckon you all have one by now) formatted as FAT32. If you have anything stored on the card, back it up in your PC because you will lose anything, then format it, so it is Guide-ready.

HERE WE GO!!

PART A: The astonishing installation of HBC: First steps into modding

In this part we will install HBC, which is used to run apps from the system menu, using the bannerbomb exploit. Along the way, DVDx will be installed, this allows the lens to recognize burned DVDs (not play backups, just see they are there). In the end we will install Bootmii, which is a very useful app as we will see next.

A1)[Only Registered Members May View Links| Click here to register] and unrar the contents in the root of your SD card. In the root of the SD card whould be:
root:\apps
root:\private
root:\wad
IOS38-64-v3610.wad
IOS70-64-v6687 [Patched][FreeTheBug].wad
boot.elf
Hacks.ini

A2)Run to your wii, place the card in the SD slot and navigate to the SD card icon, bottom left, writes SD and has the same shape, can't really miss it. Once you did this, a warning screen about scams should appear, press ok, screen will go black. A disclaimer shall appear, press one to continue.
(note: following my guide you will never get an upside down HBC. If you ever find the HBC upside down, run this installer again and install HBC again)

A3)Now three lines should appear: Homebrew channel, which can be isntalled, DVDx, also can be installed, Bootmii, which possibly will give you an error. Install Homebrew Channel, DVDX. On bootmii option, select "prepare SD card". After it finishes, install it as boot2 (if possible) or as an IOS.

Warning: Bootmii at most cases will give you an error, so it cannot be installed as a boot2. For most of you will be isntalled as an ios. That is fine.

A4)After that you are ready, you have installed all of the above! now an app can be palced in the apps folder in your SD card and be run by HBC! This has a load of functions: Media players, Emulators, Useful apps and Homebrew games! browse tham all here, but take care with the ones you dont really understand,as they might ruin your wii! most of them are really safe tho.

Those who were able to install bootmi as boot2 SHOULD BACKUP THEIR NAND RIGHT AWAY!!! If bootmii was installed as ios, then you don't need this step, although you can make one just in case. Mind that you will need a Gamecube controller tho if bootmii was an ios

Here is what you should do (abstract from Dogeggs' guide, hope he doesn't mind)
2. BACK UP YOUR NAND (OPTIONAL)

Making a NAND backup with Bootmii is highly recommended, it will recover your Wii from 99.9% of bricks.
Use the same SD card you used to install Bootmii and make sure there is at least 530mb free on it.
Bootmii is very fussy about what SD cards it uses, so avoid generic ones and try and use a Sandisk or similar.

a) Put the SD card into the Wii, if you installed Bootmii as boot2 then it will load, if it is installed as an IOS go to the Homebrew Channel, press 'home' on your wiimote and select 'Launch Bootmii'.

b) Use the power/reset/eject buttons to navigate the Bootmii menu and select the icon with the gears on it. If those buttons don't work then you will have to use a Gamecube controller.

c) Now select the icon with a green arrow pointing from the chip to the SD card and follow the on screen instructions.

D) In about 10 mins you will have a NAND backup, it is normal to have up to 80 bad blocks so don't worry if you get some.

e) Put the SD card into PC and copy the NAND backup somewhere safe, you can now delete it from your card. If you installed Bootmii as boot2 then also copy the Bootmii folder to your PC and either delete or rename it, otherwise it will load every time you switch your Wii on.

If ever you get bricked then copy the bootmii folder and NAND backup onto your card, do steps a) & b) again, using Preloader to get to HBC if necessary, then select the icon with the arrow going from the SD card to the chip. It is not recommended to restore your NAND if you have Bootmii installed as an IOS.
The following should get you a cios, so that you can play backups on your wii:

>>Those who had previously (before the update) installed ios249 may have a chance to play backed up games easily. They should run cios38rev14 installer from Homebrew Channel and use ios250. if that does not work, try running it again, but using one of the following : ios202, ios222,ios223,ios249.Then you can proceed to D. If one of these does not work either, you should have to do the following:

PART B: The extermination of the evil stub ios249

Ok, so N did this update and those ppl knew that we use ios249 to install our cios and place our backups. What did they do? they invented an empty ios ("stub") and place it in slot 249, to stop us. Like they will! Muhahahaha. Here is what we do about it. We will uninstall ios249 stub, and then install our own cios38rev14 in slot 249:

B1) [Only Registered Members May View Links| Click here to register](Thanks to Dogeggs, he sure made the trick... this will probably work for anyone) or[Only Registered Members May View Links| Click here to register] or [Only Registered Members May View Links| Click here to register] (pick start with the first one, if you get an error pick the next one and follow instructions from B2 and on again. One of this will do the trick without an error. If still nothing, try [Only Registered Members May View Links| Click here to register])

B2)Format the SD card, with FAT32, place the contents of the included folder in the SD card root. Only files in SD root should be:
root:\Wad\
root:\bootmii\
root:\startup.elf
root:\boot.dol
root:\00000001\ <-(if available)

B3)Place the SD card in the wii, start HBC and press home ar the main HBC screen. (If your wii boots to Bootmii, just go to B5)

B4)Select bootmii and wait.

B5)Wadmanager should start.(On ios select, select ios36, or try a few, 249, 250 dunno,we are scratching our heads with this)!!

B6)Select SD card and press A to continue.

B7)Select ios249 from wad folder and press A

B8)change the action to "uninstall wad", press A

B9)Done!! now to the next step!!

PART C: The installation of our beloved cios38rev14

Now that we deleted the stupid stub, the place is free so thet we can isntall cios!

C1)[Only Registered Members May View Links| Click here to register] or [Only Registered Members May View Links| Click here to register]

C2)Format the card with FAT32, download the file above and place the contents of the "Place to SD 2" folder in the SD card. It should only contain the included files:
root:\ios38-64-v3610.wad
root:\bootmii\
root:\startup.elf
root:\boot.dol
root:\00000001\ <-(if available)

C3)Place the SD card in the wii, start HBC and press home ar the main HBC screen. (If your wii boots to Bootmii, just go to C5)

C4)Select bootmii and wait.

C5)cios38rev14 installer should run and give you some options.

C6)At the beginning you should see ios249 highlighted. Keep pressing left on the wii pad until you see "Do not reload IOS" at the ios select screen, press A. (for some reason that neither I nor the other follows here seem to understand, this does not work for everyone. If this fails, try again using 249, 250, 222, 223, 36, 37... and others. Switching to one of these may work for you. be sure to restart your wii after each attempt)

C7)If you have internet connection, select "Network install", else select "SD card", Press A.

C8)Proceed with the installation, and you are done.

You should have ios249rev14 isntalled, which will allow you to run any Backup loader or USB laoder!

If you fail at doing the above, you can replace steps B and C with steps 1 to 3 of [Only Registered Members May View Links| Click here to register]

PART D: Getting the backup launchers to work : the optionals

Now we are worked up and ready to run our backups!! REMEMBER: Use Verbatim DVD-r burned at 2x-4x to minimise errors!

D1)Remember the first pack I gave you? Place the "apps" and "wad" folder of that in the root of the SD card (The first rar ok? delete all the others from SD)

D2)Place the SD in wii and boot up, go to HBC.

D3)Now:
-For DVD launching, go to NeoGamma r7 (if you get a black screen on this one, you have not done B or C correctly. Try running them again)

If you get errors 1101, 1048 or 1053 AND you are certain the media you are using are the correct ones (DVD-r Veratim at 4x) you most probably have the new D3-2 drive that does not read backups, and you should use a USB device.
FOR ALL THE STUPID NOOBS, I WILL ONLY SAY THIS HERE AND SEND TO READING ROOM FOR ETERNITY EVERYONE THAT SAYS IT AGAIN: iF YOU RUN NEOGAMMA AND IT SAYS AT THE BOTTOM "cIOS249rev14" THEN EVERYTHING IS CORRECT. IF I SEE ANYONE ASKING HOW TO VIRGINISE HIS WII TO START AGAIN I WILL SEND HIM TO RR AND CURSE HIM FOR ETERNITY. IT IS THE MOST STUPID THING YOU CAN DO. THE SAME GOES FOR THOSE WHO ASK IF THEY HAVE TO DOWNGRADE. I WILL BAN EVERYONE WHO DOWNGADES FROM NOW ON.

-For USB launching, go to USB loader GX

Ok seems that a lot of noobs ask me about a black screen at usb loader GX. This may occur in some cases:

1)ARE YOU SURE YOU DID THE ABOVE CORRECTLY? If neither neogamma nor usb loader launch correctly, then steps B adn C were not done.

2)ARE YOU SURE YOUR HDD IS COMPATIBLE WITH WII? Check this [Only Registered Members May View Links| Click here to register]

3)ARE YOU SURE YOU ARE USING THE CORRECT USB PORT? The correct one i the one at the side of the SD card adapter, the outer one, not the inner one.

4)ARE YOU SURE YOU FORMATTED THE HDD WITH WBFS MANAGER? [Only Registered Members May View Links| Click here to register]

5)ARE YOU SURE YOU PARTITIONED THE DRIVE CORRECTLY? If you have more than one partitions, make sure the WBFS one is the first in row, primary and active.

Consult [Only Registered Members May View Links| Click here to register] for more details!
At the time it loads, see these for the settings : [Only Registered Members May View Links| Click here to register]

D4)Install wads (careful with that, ok? youare not priiloader safe. Definately do not uninstall ANY IOS LOWER THAN 200!!! You will brick! I repeat for the Butt-heads: Do not uninstall ioses with a number lower than 200!!!)
To install wads, select wadmanager, and choose ios249 and SD card on the options (should be default).
-If you want Neogamma as a channel , install Neogammar8.wad
-If you want USB loader GX as a channel, install USBLoaderGXr850.wad (this will install the full channel, but you can install the forwarder instead, USB Loader GX-UNEO_Forwarder.wad, which can be directly updated by placing updated version in the SD card, yet you will need the SD card constantly inside the Wii slot to launch it. Install whichever sounds more useful to you)
Note that your HDD needs to be formatted as WBFS with WBFS Manager.

D5) You can now install ios202, ios222, ios223. From HBC, run cios222 installer and select ios249 to use. At the next screen, choose the following, one at each turn:
-ios202, for usb - using ios38 (needed for USB2.0 support at Media Players)
-ios222, for uloader - using ios38 (needed for USB support of instruments and stuff)
-ios223 mainly for GH5 - using ios38 merged with 37 (same as above)
Mind that you will need an internet connection for this!! If you do not have an internet connection, see appendix. You can also install the ioses using any other combination you like, But those are recommended for now, until a games needs otherwise. If a game does not run with USB loader, try changing the ios it uses through settings menu to one of the above.

The following are really optional and not needed to play backups. Also mind that incorrect use of them might brick you!! so use with caution!!

D6) This will install a hacked ios70 on the Wii. Please read below very carefully, as you may brick your wii if you dont follow instructions properly. A hacked ios70 is needed for 2 reasons:
a) Allows wiiware and VC games to run through SD card.
b)Allows installation of priiloader, which is the only brick protection you can get if you don't have Bootmii/boot2. It is totally recommended to install priiloader.
Here is how you install ios70:
-Start wadmanager from HBC
-Accept the agreement and with default settings (ios249 & SD card) press A to browse the SD card.
-Find IOS70-64-v6687 [Patched][FreeTheBug].wad and press A
-Make sure you install and NEVER EVER uninstall the ios70! If you uninstall ios70 or any ios lower than 200, your Wii will suffer a slow and painful DEATH!
-Once you are 10000% sure it says <install>, press A to install the file.
-Once it's done, press Home to return to HBC.
-Now you can breath.

D7)Installation of priiloader. After you install ios70patched, you are able to install priiloader.
-Find the Priiloader app in HBC.
-Read the instructions, and hold down B, and press + to use ios249. This will install priiloader.
-Once it is done, reset your wii and it will take you to Priiloader menu. If it does not, switch off, then hold down the reset button and press power to boot. This will take you to priiloader. Make sure that your wiimotes are synced before doing this, or you wont be able to go to system menu (they said they fixed it in 0.3)
-From there, go to Hacks and check the ones you want. Block disc update and Region free ones are recommended. you can check what the others do [Only Registered Members May View Links| Click here to register] If the system says that there are no hacks available do the following:
</install>GO [Only Registered Members May View Links| Click here to register] and copy the hacks for you system menu version into the hacks.ini that exists in the root of your SD card. Then save and retry. Be sure to leave a blank line at the end.
<install> -After you are done, go to the Settings and change autoboot to System menu.
-Reset the wii. You are done!
If you ever banner brick your Wii (God forbid) you can access priiloader menu by holding down reset button while booting the Wii, then access HBC to undo the brick (yeah i know it rocks). After that you can install all the Wiiware/VC/channel wads you wish, without bricking fear.
</install>
APPENDIX:
To perform an offline installation you must do the following:
1)Get NUSDownloader [Only Registered Members May View Links| Click here to register][Only Registered Members May View Links| Click here to register]
2)Run NUSDownloader and download the ioses needed by the app you want to run. For Hermes, I am not too sure which version of ioses 38 37 and 60 are used, so DL all of them to be sure . Mind that you sill need to select the version and not use the "latest version" option.
3)Make sure you dont check the WAD package option.
4)A folder will be created in the folder NUSdownloader is. Its name should be sth like \0000000X000000XXvXXXX\...
5)You must copy the contents of the folder in the SD root, but three folders must be created, which should be named after breaking the original folder name like this: root:\0000000X\000000XX\vXXXX\...
and inside the folder the files of the IOS should be placed.

EXAMPLE: folder 0000000100000025v3612 should be in the root like root:\00000001\00000025\v3612\...
Note: I have not programmed or been part of any of these programs, credits all go to them! Team twiizers, bootmii and hackmii guys, comex for his bannerbomb, and all the others that created the various apps for the wii! I merely gathered them in a single guide

There is a guy on Youtube who has recorded the steps on my guide... Havent checked this out but here is the link you can have an idea of what he does, seem correct but he may be a total idiot, as he has not checked with me yet... anyway here is the link... mind that since that things have changed but the main dea is the same.
[Only Registered Members May View Links| Click here to register]
Also he linked to my files... anyway i am adding a password to them so wiihacks get the credit
Please send feedback ASAP!!!! DO NOT PM ME FOR HELP UNLESS YOU ARE A HOT CHICK!!

Bummed because you've got a new Wii and the Twilight Princess hack won't work on it? Have an older Wii but you don't want to buy Twilight Princess just to install Homebrew? Try the free and easy bannerbomb exploit.

Update: For those with Wii IOS 4.2, you're going to want to use this new installer, cIOS Installer Xr20b.

Last year we showed you how to use the Twilight Princess hack to install the Homebrew Channel and various goodies like DVD playback. The bannerbomb exploit is the newest way to install the Homebrew Channel and works on the newest systems, unlike Twilight Princess—which has been a defunct hack since menu 4.0 was introduced.

How does it work? The hack exploits the Wii menu itself, loading a fake banner which causes a system crash and allows the exploit to load unsigned code. During our field testing it took—not counting time to carefully read the instructions and take photographs—less than ten minutes to complete the process.

For this hack you'll need a Wii, an SD card formatted to FAT, a copy of the bannerbomb file (I've linked to the banner bomb exploit file that works for the most number of Wii units right out of the gate; if it doesn't work for you, visit the main page and try some of the other versions), and the HackMii installer. The following instructions are an expanded photo-pictorial version of the instructions found on the bannerbomb exploit author's site.

Hack Your Wii for Homebrew without Twilight Princess
You'll need to copy the files from your computer to the SD card. If you're using an SD card you already use for the Wii, you'll need to rename the "private" directory to "privateold" for the duration of the hack.

First, unzip the contents of the banner bomb exploit onto the card. This should create a "private" directory with the contents of the zip file.

Next, copy the installer.elf file from the HackMii installer onto the root of the SD card and rename it to boot.elf—as seen above.

Once you have the files on the SD card, it's time to toss it in the Wii and boot up.

Hack Your Wii for Homebrew without Twilight Princess

Here we are at the initial main menu of the Wii. Nothing special to see here except for the fact that it's been over a week since we've hopped on the Wii Fit.

Click on the circular Wii icon in the lower left corner. DO NOT click on the SD card icon if you've got a newer or updated Wii with the 4.0 menu. You won't hurt your Wii, but the exploit won't work.

Hack Your Wii for Homebrew without Twilight Princess

Once you've clicked on the Wii icon, you'll be in the sub-menu seen above. Click on Data Management to access the next menu.

Hack Your Wii for Homebrew without Twilight Princess

Click on Channels to get to the SD card. You won't be able to access it via the Save Data tab.

Hack Your Wii for Homebrew without Twilight Princess

Click on the SD card tab to load the exploit.

Hack Your Wii for Homebrew without Twilight Princess

The Wii will ask you "Load boot.dol/elf?", click Yes.

Hack Your Wii for Homebrew without Twilight Princess

Not turning your Wii-hacking skills into a profit engine for global domination is a very altruistic thing to do. Take a moment to be thankful for all the awesome people in the world that create and distribute the free and open-source software that makes our lives better. Press 1 to continue loading the exploit.

Hack Your Wii for Homebrew without Twilight Princess

At this point the exploit has been executed and the HackMii installer is the temporary operating system—think LiveCD—of the Wii. From this menu you can select whether or not you want to install The Homebrew Channel, DVDx, and/or BootMii—BootMii is a more advanced tool which you may or may not care to load, it's essentially a boot loader for the Wii that provides a more extensive "takeover" of the Wii than The Homebrew Channel. You can read more about it here and here, if you're curious.

Hack Your Wii for Homebrew without Twilight Princess

On this menu you install or uninstall the respective tools. If this is your first time running the HackMii Installer you won't see the Uninstall option under any of the entries. During testing we forgot to photograph this screen and hopped back into the installer to snap it.

Hack Your Wii for Homebrew without Twilight Princess

Install The Homebrew Channel? Yes, Ma'am.

Hack Your Wii for Homebrew without Twilight Princess

After you agree to install the The Homebrew Channel it usually installs in a matter of seconds. Far faster than we were able to raise the camera to snap a picture. You'll see the SUCCESS in cash-money-green when it is done installing. You can repeat the installation process for DVDx and BootMii if you desire.

Hack Your Wii for Homebrew without Twilight Princess

After The Homebrew Channel finishes installing you'll be taken to the channel itself. The Homebrew Channel runs applications out of the /YourSDCard/Apps/ folder. During this screenshot our SD card was empty, thus the expansive bubbly-goodness of the default Homebrew screen. As you add applications they will appear here.

Hack Your Wii for Homebrew without Twilight Princess

Now we're back to the main menu. 12:46pm to 1:15pm and we're done! Under 30 minutes, including stopping to take pictures.

Wondering what you can do with it once you have the Homebrew Channel installed? Well, for example, you can backup your Wii games to a hard drive for safe keeping and faster load times, play old-school games in emulation, and play DVD-backups without a modchip.

After the excitement of the Wii’s “revolutionary” controller died down, a lot of us adult gamers began to realize Nintendo’s missteps on the console: The lack of mass storage, HD support, and DVD playback, and a scarce online community were all reasons my interest in the console began to dwindle. If it weren’t for Homebrew, then apart from the occasional first party franchise throwback such as Zelda, Super Smash Bros., or New Super Mario, there wouldn’t be much of a reason for me to pick up a nunchuk.

So if you’re looking to breathe some new life into your Wii, consider getting into the homebrew scene. What started as a couple of curious hackers has become a huge community of developers and users looking to bring some amazing new features to the aging console. Emulation, DVD playback, and the ability to run Linux are all made possible by installing The Homebrew Channel.

Big N plays a continuous cat-and-mouse game with Wii hackers, much like Apple does in the iPhone jailbreaking saga, but despite Nintendo's best efforts, the Wii Homebrew scene has matured, and the necessary software is easier to install than ever before. If you’re new to the game, here’s how to get it going.

Warning: Proceed at your own risk! If you read the documentation included with the installers and use caution you will be enjoying the fruits of Wii Homebrew in no time, but be warned that if you do something silly there is always that tiny chance of “bricking” your Wii.
What You Need:

1. A Wii running the latest Wii System Menu 4.2 (of course, Wii Homebrew is possible on older versions, but the installation process is slightly different, so for the sake of this how-to, I will assume you have the newest update).
2. HackMii Installer v0.6 and Bannerbomb v2.
3. An SD card (FAT32 formatted) and Wi-Fi connection.

How to Install Wii Homebrew:

1. Download Bannerbomb v2 and HackMii.
2. Create a folder named “private” on the root level of your SD card if there isn’t one already.
3. Unzip the Bannerbomb files to your SD card.
4. Copy the HackMii installer file, “installer.elf,” to the root of your SD card and rename it to “boot.elf”.
5. Now fire up your Wii and go to SD Card menu in the bottom left of the home/channel screen. Insert your SD card. It should pop up a dialog asking you to “Load boot.dol/elf?” to which you should say yes. This will install the Bannerbomb exploit which is what makes Homebrew possible.
6. Bannerbomb will then run the “HackMii” installer which installs the Homebrew Channel. It can also optionally install DVDx (which lets you use apps that use the DVD drive: recommended) and BootMii (which protects against bricking). Once that is done, you will have a new Channel on your home screen called “The Homebrew Channel,” and the geeky fun can really begin!

Apps to Check Out

Here are some other apps to check out once you have Homebrew running:

* The Homebrew Browser: An app that lets you browse and install homebrew apps to your SD card straight from your Wii; without this, you have to remove the SD cards and copy apps onto it using your computer.
* Gecko OS: Lets you play Wii discs from other regions (DVDx required). Additionally, Gecko OS now includes “Ocarina” a homebrew cheat app, reminiscent of Action Replay or Game Genie.
* MPlayer CE: A media player for Wii (DVDx required) that includes playlists and DVD movie playback.
* Wii-Linux: No hardware hack would be complete without the obligatory Linux build!
