Wii Key

Today [2010.08.20] we have released Wiikey Fusion update v1.4 which partially fixes an issue that causes the Mii/Photo channel to crash on some Wiis when no SD card is present. With this update, all Wiis should now work as long as SD card or DVD is present. This will be completely resolved in the upcoming 1.5 firmware update. Various other minor bugfixes and improvements have been included in this release and we recommend that everyone upgrades. It can be downloaded from the member area.

My games from other regions do not work, or have stopped working

Applies to: Wiikey 1, Wiikey 2, Wiikey Fusion
Check your system Menu version. Starting from System Menu 4.2 and onwards a new method of detecting region is used, which cannot be bypassed by Wiikey. The detection is done in such a way that it is no longer possible to achieve region override. This applies to both original discs and backups, regardless of media.
What is Error #002, and how can I fix it?

Applies to: Wiikey 1, Wiikey 2, Wiikey Fusion

Error 002 means the Wii system needs to be updated. Some games come bundled with an update for the Wii system. If the Wii needs updating, the update must be installed before the game can be started. However, if the Wii cannot see the update partition because the brickblocker feature is set to block all updates, or if a 'scrubbed' game image where the update partition has been removed is used, the Wii will allow the game to start, resulting in Error 002.

One solution is to install the system update, provided that the game is of the same region as your Wii. Installing updates from other regions may brick uyour Wii, so make sure the game you are using to update is from the same region.

Note that installing updates can sometimes have undesirable results, such as the removal of region free capabilities with System Menu 4.2 or higher.
I have installed the NSMB update, but the game still doesnt start, or doesnt show up in browser?

Applies to: Wiikey 1, Wiikey 2
Even without the update a working copy of the game should show up in the browser and start up. Note that NSMB comes with 2 system updates on the disc.
Can I burn the update ISO to DVD and update from DVD?

Applies to: Wiikey Fusion
No. Currently WKF only supports updating from SD.
What is WBFS?

Applies to: Wiikey Fusion
WBFS, or Wii Backup File System, is a file system specifically designed for storing Wii backups. It allows the size of the games on the disk to be reduced by stripping out  redundant data. How well a game will compress varies from game to game.
Can I put Gamecube games on a WBFS formatted drive?

Applies to: Wiikey Fusion
Yes, however most WBFS applications will only allow Wii games to be written. A modified version of WBFS Manager, which allows Gamecube images to be used, is available for download on in the members area.
I have a Wiikey 1 or Wiikey 2 modchip installed on my drive. Do I have to remove it to use Wiikey Fusion?

Applies to: Wiikey 1, Wiikey 2, Wiikey Fusion
No. Wiikey and and 2 can be used in conjunction with chips attaching to drive cable.
I sometimes I have to power cycle the Wii for it to detect a disc/SD card. Is this normal?

Applies to: Wiikey Fusion
This issue sometimes occured with pre-1.2 firmwares. Please install the latest firmware update from the members area.
I have a "D3-2" drive and I read that it wont load backup DVDs. Will this chip work with my drive?

Applies to: Wiikey 1, Wiikey 2
No. There is currently no way of making your drive read backups. The alternative is to get a chip such as Wiikey Fusion that allows games to be loaded from other media.
I have a "D3-2" drive and I read that it wont load backup DVDs. Will this chip work with my drive?

Applies to: Wiikey Fusion
This chip will not allow you to load backup DVD media from your drive. However, you can still load games from SD card.

WiiKey Base Disc

The base 1.2 disc for the WiiKey is a DVD packed with application for Nintendo Wii consoles that have been modded with WiiKey Modchip. It's main purpose is to configure the WiiKey modchip settings. Along side of it's basic practical uses, this base disc allows users to backup their Wii/Gamecube games to an SD card via a GCMC (gamecube memory card) to SD adapter, Load media (game's, emulators, applications, audio and video) via the SD-GCMC adapter and/or DVD media, and play a variety of classic SNES (Super Nintendo Entertainment System) video game ROMs via the SNES9x emulator.

Based on user e-mails we have made a WiiKey FAQ page.
WiiKey Review:

The WiiKey was announced at the beginning of February 2007 and shipped to the stores at the end of the month. It is one of many drive modchips available for the Nintendo Wii and it acts as a firmware replacement funneled through the debug serial port - tricking the DVD drive into believing that Copied DVD-R backup is in fact a legit original game DVD. This trick works much like current Xbox 360 chips do. Like its current competitors, the WiiKey is installed onto the Wii's drive either by quicksolder or using six wires. Mod-chip can then be updated through the use of a Setup DVD Disc which can be downloaded from the WiiKey website.

Compatibility of WiiKey is very good - no slowdowns / stuttering and region patching on the Wii does indeed work. The WiiKey performs as expected and does a good job. It gladly accepts any disc you throw at it (provided it is a good enough brand/dye of course) also if it is rewrittable

WiiKey PROS
+ Mod-Chip is easy to install with quicksolder method or wired method, if you have soldering experience.
+ Flawless performance and perfect compatibility with Wii backups, even on same DVDs that gave read errors with CycloWiz v1 work with WiiKey.
+ Runs games burned on Re-Writeable DVD-RW Discs sawing you a lot of $ and letting you test the game before recording it on DVD-R!
+ Does not require GCOS to play Game Cube isos from other regions.
+ Upgradable and configurable via DVD - with onboard EEPROM.
+ Come with a unique DVD Dumper application for backing up Wii games to an SD CARD.

WiiKey CONS
- The board and position of the quicksolder points may require a bit more skill to install because aligning has to be precisely.
- Not compitble with Wii D2C -- get Wii D2CKey mod-chip forthe new consoles.

To open up the console and install the chip the following tools will be required:

* A Tri-wing screwdriver
* A small prying tool
* A small phillips head screwdriver

Easy to Installation and a pleasure to operate!
Can use Quicksolder Method or wired installation.
You Can Really Upgrade it via DVD!
The Price is Right!

The WiiKey Fusion is the successor to the very popular and successful Drive Key solderless modchip, it combines ALL the functions of the Drive Key with the new ability to load games from a stylish external SD card reader which is included with your WiiKey Fusion purchase.

With the introduction of the newest Wii consoles including the black Wii which have drives with the D3-2, D3 mini and D4 chipsets, Nintendo have disabled the playing of backups from disc/DVD. This rendered all previous modchips unusable, the WiiKey Fusion gets around this problem by allowing you to load backup games from standard SD/SDHC (Secure Digital) memory cards.

The WiiKey Fusion supports both standard SD cards as well as larger SDHC cards up to 32GB in size allowing you to fit a large number of games on one card alleviating the need to switch discs to change game.

The WiiKey Fusion is the next generation in solderless modchips providing a solderless plug and play modding solution for ALL Wii consoles. No soldering required, simply open the Wii, disconnect the DVD drive cable from the mainboard and connect to the WiiKey Fusion. Using the ribbon cable provided, connect the WiiKey Fusion to the mainboard, simple as that!

Ideal if you have a console with epoxy/'black glue' on the drive controller, D3/'D2nothing' console or a new D3-2 / D3 mini or D4 drive console, the WiiKey Fusion is compatible with ALL currently released Wii consoles, simply plug and play.

The WiiKey Fusion works with and allows backup games to be loaded from SD cards on ALL currently available Wii consoles including the Black Wii Console. It works with BOTH SD card and backup DVD/disc on DMS, D2A, D2B, D2C, D2C-2, D2E, D3/d2nothing drive consoles, the table below provides a summary.

Nearly every video game system that comes out now has some sort of Mod chip that you can buy and install (at your own risk of course) to allow the system to play "Backed Up" games. These backups are actually burned
games called backups because of course it is illegal to burn games and use them. So where do you get this mod chip?

The best one around is the Wii Key and you can get one at, then go to their resellers section to find a place to buy the Wii Key online. The product is great works very well and doesn't have many issues, if you install it correctly. Before you get all crazy and start installing make sure you read the forums and find out the do's and don'ts the installing the Wii Key. There is a lot of great information here at AfterDawn just put in Wii Key in the search and find a bunch of great resources on installation of this mod chip.

What most users have run into, including myself, were problems taking their Wii apart, which should only be done if you want to void your warranty and risk any damage to your Wii's internal components. If you are careful you won't have any problems but just remember you are taking apart and modifying a $300 piece of equipment and if you mess it up you will be replacing your system and the warranty isn't going to cover it. The wing nuts can be an issue and if you don't have the right tool they can strip and then you might have to drill the out and it will be a pain. Just be careful when you are working on the Wii, take your time and don't rush, a mistake can be costly.

You are also going to have to solder some of the wires so that it works properly so keep this in mind, soldering can be tedious work and you need to again be very precise when doing it. There is a guide to what to solder on the Wii Key here. There are also several different forums on the installation of the Wii Key on the AfterDawn forums, do your research before you begin the process.
